At Issaquah Montessori,
our classrooms are spacious compared to what you might find
in a traditional preschool."Simply beautiful"
best describes the carefully thought design and layout of
each room. There is order and careful structure designed
to invite natural exploration. Each classroom is divided
into several logical areas by low open shelves on which
the children discover an intriguing learning activities.
Below you will find a description of each area accompanied
by a photograph taken in one of our classrooms. Each classroom
has the following areas; Practical Life, Sensorial, Language
and Math, Art, Music, Geography and Science.
|
|
Sensorial

|
The
Sensorial materials isolate each unique sense. The
child is able to define and categorize objects by
color, sound, texture, smell, weight and size, which
prepares for the abstract concepts of language, math
and science.
|
|
Mathematics
|
Concrete
materials build upon each other to give the child a
breadth and depth of mathematical concept including
numerals, quantity, the decimal system, and four operations.
|
|
Botany

| The
world is divided into living and non-living entities,
which the child classifies. In this way the child can
put order into his/her world. The children learn the
names of plant parts and species. They also grow plants
of their own. |
|
Practical Life

|
The
practical life activities are the foundation for the
child's development of concentration, motor coordination
and self-esteem. Practical life skills are the basics
for becoming.
|
|
Art

|
The
child's creativity is nurtured through painting and
craft activities.
|
|
Animals

|
The
child helps to maintain a healthy environment for
a variety
of animals, who are our classroom pets.
|
|
Music
The
multi-sensory approach to basic music theory is used. This
includes introductions to various cultures, composers, and
instruments.
|
Geography
|
Materials
provide the child the opportunity to classify the
earth into continents, countries, states and land
formations, both presently and historically. They
learn what the earth consists of and what to do to
keep it environmentally healthy.
|
|
Language

|
The
complexity of the written word is simplified by teaching
the phonetics. Children use many senses to learn the
"sounds" giving them the necessary tools
to read and write. Poetry, stories and drama offer
the child areas of expression for language. French,
as a foreign language is also offered.
